Though many of us suffer from Palin Factor Fatigue, it is irrefutable that there is a nagging curiosity to have the question answered, ?How in the world did Sarah Palin become so popular and why do we still need to hear about her?? My book answers these questions in detail and urges us all to be vigilant. She is one of a small pool of ?rising stars in the republican party? as John McCain stated as recently as January 25, 2009 on Fox News Sunday.

As unbelievable as her meteoric rise was we cannot delude ourselves, turning our backs once again, into thinking that she and those like her are going away. This woman is joined by millions of loyalists whose perception is that she was persecuted in the media, stifled by McCain, and mocked by liberals - and now the theocratic conservatives are regrouping with a vengeance!

About

THE BLOG--HISTORY

"Blue Oasis" began in 2005 in its Blogger format (now an archive) and became possibly the first Alaska Blog on Progressive Politics. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis was honored to represent Alaska as the state blog.

Transition--Community Blog

In September 2008, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis moved to a Soapblox Community Blog format. Readers can become full participants by registering on the blog to comment and write "diaries." Diary titles appear on the right sidebar for folks to read and provide comments. Blog editors may choose to move some of these diaries to the front page.

While this Community was formed specifically with Alaska in mind, all "friends of Alaska" are welcome as members!

**Note about registering** Scroll down the right side until you find the link to register. Then, just follow the instructions!

**Note about comments** To comment on a story, click on the heading and then look for the "comment bar" at the bottom (it's light grey, I can't seem to change it). I believe the font color NOW permits you to see the "post comment" text.

YOUR BLOGMISTRESS

My name is Linda Kellen Biegel and I am a former 15-year Federal employee. Thirteen of those years were spent working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I am also semi-retired from the Alaska music scene (singer, sound tech, stage manager, logistics).

When the blog was chosen to represent Alaska in the DNCC State Blogger Pool at the Denver Convention, I attended with the help of Alaska Real blogmistress, Writing Raven and my daughter Morrigan. On August 29th, one day after Barack Obama's inspiring speech at Invesco Field , my life took another turn as it did for all Alaska bloggers when Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain's VP running mate. Since then, I've either assisted or have been interviewed by media from the UK, Italy, Australia and Germany as well as national media outlets such as Wall Street Journal, NY Times, ABC Good Morning America's Kate Snow, National Journal, Dallas Morning News, LA Times, and NPR.

Presently, I work as a freelance writer, PR, event coordinator, community organizer, wife to computer programmer Josh and mother to 11-year-old Morrigan. Our family especially enjoys our summers in Alaska where we get to subsistence set-net fish Sockeye salmon as well as halibut fish/whalewatch in the family's homemade aluminum boat, "The Neverdone" (when it's working). We reside in Anchorage, Alaska.

Origin of "Celtic Diva"

I've used "Celtic Diva" as a screen name since the early 1990's on Web TV.

"Celtic"

"Folks have asked about my Celtic heritage, especially in light of my name. What they don't realize is that I'm adopted. I was born Valerie Morehead of the Clan Muirhead. I was adopted at three-months-old by the Kellens. I always "knew" I was Celt even before really knew. I was drawn to all things Scottish, especially music. That's why my parents eventually told me at age 16."

"Diva"

"Linda is well-known in Alaska & beyond as the prominent progressive political blogger Celtic Diva of Celtic Diva?s Blue Oasis. But back in the day, the early 1990s, I knew her as Linda Kellen, a member of the local folk/rock band Sky is Blu, which amongst other things performed in at least a couple or so of the annual women?s show Celebration of Change, in which I also performed. And if you don?t already know, let me tell you: Linda is one fine damn singer."

I went on after the break-up of "Sky is Blu" to perform with various Alaska musicians and work with national folks like Bo Diddly, Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Taj Mahal, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bad Company, Creedence Clearwater, Carny Wilson, etc...

"Turkey Slaughter Video" -- fallout update

by: Celtic Diva

Sat Nov 22, 2008 at 14:34:18 PM AKST

(For full background and photos, GO HERE.)

Smiling Kris Perry, Sarah Palin and man getting turkey ready for plucking.

Here's the latest BS from the Governor's office:

[Communications Director, Bill McAllister] said that, while the cameras were rolling and a worker at the farm began placing turkeys head-down in a big metal cone to cut their necks and drain blood, Kris Perry, the governor's friend and director of her Anchorage office, "was actually physically nudging (the KTUU videographer), saying 'look at this,' and encouraging him not to frame the shot to include that, or to do something about it later, where he wouldn't use it," McAllister said.

Kris Perry on far left NOT nudging Scott Jensen while he's filming Sarah Palin.
Considering how he's holding the camera, wouldn't nudging him have made the
camera jerk rather violently and/or hit the interviewer in the head?

- I believe award-winning photo-journalist Scott Jenson when he told CC on KUDO 1080 yesterday that Sarah Palin, along with assistant Kris Perry, chose the spot where the interview took place. Whether the "slaughter" was going on or not, THE TUB AND THE FUNNELS WERE FULL OF BLOOD AND GUTS!!!!  What idiots (whether the Governor or her staff) would choose to film there?

Scott's story and the crew's version has been consistent from the beginning, it's been the Governor's office whose story has been rather...ahhh..."fluid."

By the way, Steve McDonald, you are a tool for throwing Jensen under the bus.  Considering how Palin has treated the media since she's been "home," how can you just roll over for her?

- Kris Perry WAS NOT "nudging Jensen" during the whole interview because she was walking all around while it was going on!!!  Perry WALKED RIGHT PAST ME AND STARED (I was trying figure out who she was) during the interview while I was waiting for the cameras to move so I could get a shot of the pardoned turkey. She walked back to the spot where you see her in the picture above, NOT NUDGING Scott Jensen.  She's even smiling in the picture at the top taken later...while she was NOT NUDGING Scott Jensen nor at an angle to do so.

To clarify, I can't say whether or not she EVER "nudged" him.  However, I don't know too many people that would nudge a camera man while he was trying to hold a camera steady shooting interview footage of their boss.

- Suppposed friend of the Governor, Corrections Department Commissioner Joe Schmidt, was there yakking it up with the folks around him.  He didn't do anything either!

- Finally, Bill McAllister, WHERE WERE YOU????  WHY WEREN'T YOU THERE WITH YOUR BOSS MAKING SURE SOMETHING LIKE THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN?  Why was Kris Perry there instead of the one million members of the Governor's communication's staff?  DO NOT blame the media...especially the station where you spent your time brown nosing for the Governor until she hired you.

I also understand there are some folks who are upset with me for writing the following:

I think KTUU angled it a bit that way on purpose. (Note to Governor Palin's staff:  Did you not think that...just maybe...the camera crews would be salivating to get a shot to the network that so perfectly fit the lower-48 "Palin stereotype?")

- If you look at the video, it is clear that Gov. Palin is not centered, but is being filmed slightly on the left side of the screen, while the turkey funnels are on the right.  If you look at my "straight on" photo, I only get the left-hand funnel in the shot.

That being said:

HE HAD EVERY RIGHT TO SHOOT IT THAT WAY!  Again, it was the responsibility of Governor Palin and her people to make sure the setting was appropriate for the message they were trying to convey.

THIS BOTCHED EVENT WAS THE FAULT OF THE GOVERNOR AND HER STAFF...PERIOD.

Just like everything else (0.00 / 0)
she does... this will have a life of its own. Like wardrobe-gate, trooper-gate, everything else, she can't let go, she just beats that dead horse (or should I say turkey) on and on until there is nothing left, because it keeps her name in the papers and on the airwaves. And the media just keeps feeding her. That is the worst part of it. Once the media goes away and quits playing with her it will stop, if they ever will.

They now have 3 ads playing that someone put up the money for saying Thank You to her for running for VP. Have you seen them?? One of them has a turkey on a platter....they had a great laugh over that one this morning I tell you.

They are disgusting I think. But There are a few people yet who think she is wonderful. So some love it....makes my stomach hurt.

I agree, (0.00 / 0)
it is the responsibility of the Governor's Media staff to catch such a botched shot(if it was a botched shot)and simply could have done a retake. The turkey she was pardoning was still alive. Hopefully, soon we can vote her out of office and Alaska can stop losing face.

Steve McDonald? (4.00 / 1)
You are surprised that Steve McDonald of KTUU should blame the cameraman for Palin's goof?  McDonald is to journalists what beige is to colors.  His idea of controversy is to wear a bright tie on TV, and he apparently views his role as parroting whatever release the Governor's office sends him.  He has a lengthy record of empty-headed boosterism of any power-that-be.  Listen to his part on "Anchorage Edition" any week.  I challenge anyone at the end of the show to remember a single thing McDonald said.  It should come as no surprise that all the aggressive journalism of this last campaign came from Outside reporters.

Are we doing what she wants by reading about her? (0.00 / 0)
She couldn't do this without writers and readers. I don't click on her at the ADN any more. Yet here I am, clicking on this. . .
