Linda,
I'm very sad to hear about your little Katy. I also hope you sue the pants off these clowns that own the dog. And they should never be allowed to own anything else for the rest of their lives.
The one post about poisoning the dog isn't going to help anything but cause the wrong creature to suffer. The guy that wrote it has it all backwards...You want to feed poison meatballs to anyone it should be the damned owners.
For that matter I'll buy the beef...
Take care and my best to your family!
Judith

The yellow ones are globe flowers... come in yellow and orange. Can't remember botanical name...
In Southeast AK they are one of the earliest to bloom. We don't get the sun like Linda does in her part of AK so the globe flowers brighten spirits as well as gardens :-)
Linda- have had you much on my mind. Am happy you are finally feeling better and getting out some.

I am so so sorry about Katy. Our cat was attacked by a dog last year. We were very lucky.
As I write this, she is sitting on my lap watching the screen.
She is dying from kidney disease. She is 17 and has been such a wonderful cat, she is the one that sits, lays on me when I am in bed with my back.
We will have to make a decision about her soon, I do not want her to suffer.
I am so glad you are feeling better. The pictures are beautiful. I see somebody else identified the Columbine, it is one of my favorite flowers!
How are your vegetables doing? I have lost my onions to the leek moth, I only hope we do not get late blight again this year!!!

A couple of suggestions

Okay, so, the owners of the dog that killed your puppy are ignoring animal control. Don't know how things work up there on the Last Frontier, but, try this.
1. Go to the courthouse and see how you can file criminal charges against them.
2. Watch for them to let their dog out again. Meanwhile, purchase a pound of ground beef and a half-pound of rat poison. Mix the beef and the rat poision, shape into balls about the size of a golf ball, freeze. When they let their dog out, roll a couple of meatballs under their trailer -- preferably at night. You might want to make these purchases in another town.

I am amazed you were able to write this account of Katy's death. Lori and I send our condolences, but know that it can't bring Katy back. I just burst into tears thinking what would I feel if little Chloe were taken in that manner.
I lived in Georgia during the eighties when the big debate raged about pit bulls. I worked as a vet tech at that time, and my experience with that breed was mostly positive, so the debate took me by surprise... until I had a chance to learn more about the circumstances of ownership of those dogs who had become vicious.
I am not going to paint the breed as angelic. Each breed has its strengths and its flaws. I adore the dachshunds, but everyday I take them somewhere, I have to remind kids to approach with caution. I have to reconcile myself to the fact that they love to talk (translate bark like hysterical banshees) amongst themselves when they discover something interesting, or when person first knocks on the door. Pit bulls can be gentle, loving animals, with great patience and devotion to family and even guests. They are very pack oriented dogs, which many owners fail to recognize. I have seen many, many owners in Muldoon isolate their pits, locking them on a chain or throwing them in the back room of a house for long periods with no companionship. The animals become neurotic and distrustful. Gauging by the numbers of people I have seen this winter walking pit bull puppies, I think my neighborhood may have more than our share of them. It scares me, not because I dislike the breed but because the owners do NOT look like they have a clue.
Anyway, I have no idea what I hoped to accomplish with this diatribe. Dog ownership is a sacred honor for me. I would fight for mine. I had to once when a boxer jumped a fence and charged my two doxies. Luckily for my brood, this dog recognized dominant behavior and back down. I don't take them for walks much now. I know how many unrestrained dogs roam our neighborhood.
Linda, you, your family, and especially your daughter fought like warriors to save Katy. The Valkyries must have sang to see her defending her beloved friend so righteously. From this tragedy, she will have come to know her strengths in the face of terrible odds, and will have grown. No one can take that from her. The string that weaves together the fabric of your family has withstood the unraveling, and the string that was Katy will forever meld within the pattern of your lives.
We honor the spirit of Katy, and recognize the strength of the thread of her life in the pattern of your Kilim which provides comfort when the family eats, shelter when it beds down at night, and honor when representing the family to the village.

Linda, Josh & Morrigan:
My heart breaks each time I think of your wonderful puppy and what happened to her. It breaks even further knowing that you all watched and heard this terrible event and how your hearts break.
May all of our tears join with yours to help ease the hurt and help Katy find her way to the Rainbow Bridge.
May there be justice for the owners and this dog. May they find their souls and realize that it is only a matter of time before something even worse happens and this dog causes human suffering or death.
Katy is loved and she had the best family in the world!

I love it when you post flower photos! The blue ones are called Columbine a.k.a. Aquilegia, they come in lots of different colors and sometimes with double petals.
I see orange marigolds, red geraniums and the last yellow flowers I have no idea but they're lovely. I didn't know poppies grew in Alaska. It's amazing how tough they are yet they look so delicate. Thanks for sharing!
P.S. I'm so sorry about Katy. HUGS to you and your family.

... a little addition:
I was so tired last night, I did not take the time to proof-read/check my writing.
Sorry. I also wanted to state how CUTE and BEAUTIFUL Katy was and always will be in your/our eyes!
Also, the Rainbow Bridge somehow does not come out correctly the way it is supposed to be - I have it actually so it looks like it could be framed, kind of like the 'Desiderata'.
OK, I try again, but cannot change the font to calligraphy:
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge,
there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.
There is only one thing missing:
They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.
So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly looks up!
The nose twitches. The ears are up. The eyes are staring.
And this one suddenly runs from the group.
You have been seen,
and when you and your special friend meet, you take her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusted pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

{{{HUGGGZZZ}}} to you and your family!
I know a pet with the right family is a member of the family, and I very much believe Katy was a member of your family. As such, she is very much missed.
I hope you will be able to find justice for her...
Here is something that might help you a bit in your sorrow - I know it helped me when my bunny died at the ripe old age of 11 1/2 years...
THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.
I am so very sorry for your loss. As a pet owner, it breaks my heart that you underwent this needless pain, and I'm embarrassed that a fellow pet owner was such a coward they could not take responsibility.
I realize this is too late to help in this case, but my dad used to swear by spraying fighting dogs with the garden hose. I pray you will never need this information, but others might read it and remember in a moment of crisis.

File charges

Yes, there is justice, you need to file charges against the owners. It's not the dog's fault, he's just doing what he knows, just like my yellow lab drops a slimy ball in guests labs. He's a dog, that's what he does.
I was at Pet Emergency for 3 hours on Sunday, my pal has some kind of malady that the vets can't find. He's only 3 but is lethargic and runs out of gas easily. He had x-rays and labs drawn, nothing.
While we were there, 4 dogs were brought in, all victims of dog fights, all had been on leashes or in their own yards, all had been attacked by dogs that got away from their owners. Oh and a baby duck that some kids were trying to run over with a bike.
Last night, I had a meeting so my wife took both dogs for a short walk, trying to see if the Lab was recovering. About 10 minutes into it, some moron comes by on a bicycle with 2 dogs trotting along. No leashes. Growling, posturing, near fight. She goes a bit farther and a pit bull is just about dug out from under his fence. My wife yells at the owner, yells at the bike rider, gives up and goes home.
Our dogs are never loose. They are either in a fenced yard or on leashes. Voice control is a joke.
You need to file charges and remember, the next time it may not be a pet, it could be a child that gets bitten.
