Though many of us suffer from Palin Factor Fatigue, it is irrefutable that there is a nagging curiosity to have the question answered, ?How in the world did Sarah Palin become so popular and why do we still need to hear about her?? My book answers these questions in detail and urges us all to be vigilant. She is one of a small pool of ?rising stars in the republican party? as John McCain stated as recently as January 25, 2009 on Fox News Sunday.

As unbelievable as her meteoric rise was we cannot delude ourselves, turning our backs once again, into thinking that she and those like her are going away. This woman is joined by millions of loyalists whose perception is that she was persecuted in the media, stifled by McCain, and mocked by liberals - and now the theocratic conservatives are regrouping with a vengeance!

About

THE BLOG--HISTORY

"Blue Oasis" began in 2005 in its Blogger format (now an archive) and became possibly the first Alaska Blog on Progressive Politics. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis was honored to represent Alaska as the state blog.

Transition--Community Blog

In September 2008, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis moved to a Soapblox Community Blog format. Readers can become full participants by registering on the blog to comment and write "diaries." Diary titles appear on the right sidebar for folks to read and provide comments. Blog editors may choose to move some of these diaries to the front page.

While this Community was formed specifically with Alaska in mind, all "friends of Alaska" are welcome as members!

**Note about registering** Scroll down the right side until you find the link to register. Then, just follow the instructions!

**Note about comments** To comment on a story, click on the heading and then look for the "comment bar" at the bottom (it's light grey, I can't seem to change it). I believe the font color NOW permits you to see the "post comment" text.

YOUR BLOGMISTRESS

My name is Linda Kellen Biegel and I am a former 15-year Federal employee. Thirteen of those years were spent working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I am also semi-retired from the Alaska music scene (singer, sound tech, stage manager, logistics).

When the blog was chosen to represent Alaska in the DNCC State Blogger Pool at the Denver Convention, I attended with the help of Alaska Real blogmistress, Writing Raven and my daughter Morrigan. On August 29th, one day after Barack Obama's inspiring speech at Invesco Field , my life took another turn as it did for all Alaska bloggers when Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain's VP running mate. Since then, I've either assisted or have been interviewed by media from the UK, Italy, Australia and Germany as well as national media outlets such as Wall Street Journal, NY Times, ABC Good Morning America's Kate Snow, National Journal, Dallas Morning News, LA Times, and NPR.

Presently, I work as a freelance writer, PR, event coordinator, community organizer, wife to computer programmer Josh and mother to 11-year-old Morrigan. Our family especially enjoys our summers in Alaska where we get to subsistence set-net fish Sockeye salmon as well as halibut fish/whalewatch in the family's homemade aluminum boat, "The Neverdone" (when it's working). We reside in Anchorage, Alaska.

Origin of "Celtic Diva"

I've used "Celtic Diva" as a screen name since the early 1990's on Web TV.

"Celtic"

"Folks have asked about my Celtic heritage, especially in light of my name. What they don't realize is that I'm adopted. I was born Valerie Morehead of the Clan Muirhead. I was adopted at three-months-old by the Kellens. I always "knew" I was Celt even before really knew. I was drawn to all things Scottish, especially music. That's why my parents eventually told me at age 16."

"Diva"

"Linda is well-known in Alaska & beyond as the prominent progressive political blogger Celtic Diva of Celtic Diva?s Blue Oasis. But back in the day, the early 1990s, I knew her as Linda Kellen, a member of the local folk/rock band Sky is Blu, which amongst other things performed in at least a couple or so of the annual women?s show Celebration of Change, in which I also performed. And if you don?t already know, let me tell you: Linda is one fine damn singer."

I went on after the break-up of "Sky is Blu" to perform with various Alaska musicians and work with national folks like Bo Diddly, Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Taj Mahal, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bad Company, Creedence Clearwater, Carny Wilson, etc...

Palin fans wait hours in the rain and cold...get stiffed. Now you know how Alaska feels..

by: Celtic Diva

Fri Nov 20, 2009 at 13:47:55 PM AKST

Per Rumproast blog, angry fans in Nobleville, IN yesterday started heckling Palin after she pulled a "quitter." She left them in the lurch, without an autograph, after they waited as much as 13 hours in the rain.  Some even had the wristbands which "guaranteed" them a signature.

Per a former Palin fan:

Gary Conner:

Sarah,

You angered and disappointed over 300 families in Noblesville tonight. I attended Mike Huckabee's book signing yesterday. He had pre-signed book in case he would be unable to sign all the books for people who qualified. His books would be exchange one for one with any one whose book he could not sign

First, you should work to make this right. Second, you need to make sure that it never happens again!

Another fan wasn't quite so forgiving:

Jordan Harris:

I just spent 9 hours of my day, $40 of my hard earned money on two of your books, and took the whole day off work to watch you jump on a bus and throw a half-heated wave to the crowd you were avoiding.

I have never felt so disrespected. How can you claim that you are different? You aren't. You are just as selfish as everyone else in Washington. It breaks my heart. I thought you might be the answer to the turmoil this country is under but you aren't. You just slapped hundreds of Hoosiers in the face. The hard working type of people that you claim to represent.

You say in your book that you chose to sleep well over eating well. At the end of the day I know that you don't care that you wasted the whole day of some 20 year old college student who lives on their own. I understand that all that matters is that I spent my money on two of your books. I'm sure your eating well. You certainly have no reason to be sleeping well.

A local Indiana news crew backs them up, except there is a discrepancy in the number of fans left wanting.  Most of the other sources I've looked at say at least 300 (some even 400).  This news station claims it was more like 100.  Not surprisingly, this is the one featured on DrudgeReport's YouTube account:

And there's more trouble ahead...

It seems that hundreds of people, again, spent the night outside of Borders in Columbus Ohio.

This was the story when they spent the night in the cold:

Maria DiLeo, a marketing manager for Borders, said that the first 1,000 who show up when the Sawmill Road store opens at 10 a.m. will be assured of getting Palin's autograph on her book.

"We're giving out 1,000 wristbands to get in line to guarantee they'll get in the bookstore" for the signing, DiLeo said. "After we go through the 1,000 with wristbands, and if time allows, (Palin) could continue signing, but I can't guarantee she'll sign more than 1,000."

However, by light of day, things had changed:

Borders doors opened at 10 a.m. and those who had waited the longest 18 hours in some cases got their wristbands first.

The first 500 people received a wristband and they are guranteed a chance to meet Palin and get their book signed.

That is a change Palin's staff made in response to large crowds originally there was supposed to be 1,000 wristbands handed out, Bell reported.

I wonder how those folks felt when they froze their butts thinking 1,000 were going to get in, only to find out only half that number actually would?

Yep...it's so good for Sarah's future now that they are "getting to know her" the same way Alaskans do.

By the way...WE TOLD YOU SO!

Sarah Still Bailin' (0.00 / 0)
I'm glad you were able to pick up on this one, Linda.  Even with 15-second mini-conversations that still means that only 720 people can make it through in 3 hours.

From comments made by some other friends apparently asking them their names seems to qualify as a "personal touch" from Sarah.  That's the secret?

Idiots (0.00 / 1)
1. HarperCollins just announced they are increasing the printing of Palin's book - again. Now set for 2.5 million copies.......after only being on sale for 4 days.

2. The person who got left out at Noblesville?  Teresa Hedricks, who is on Twitter, @cfmommie11 and lo and behold, she is currently following 91 people. 89 of them are Hollywood celebrities, One for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the only political person on her follower list is, Barack Obama. Solid source, I'm sure.

3. Speaking of sources, yesterday Linda had a post up in which Martin Eisenstadt accused Palin of taking a payoff from Asics. "Martin Eisenstadt" was outed as a hoax over a year ago by the New York Times.

Slow learners, this bunch.

Another one bites the dust (0.00 / 1)
When Pete Rouse calls tomorrow, tell him you're real sorry:

Members of the Alaska Public Offices Commission unanimously ruled Thursday that Sarah Palin has sufficiently disclosed the Arctic Cat sponsorship her husband, Todd, received for the Iron Dog snowmachine race.

The commissioners accepted the filings with no discussion. At their September meeting, they'd asked their staff to find out the worth of Todd Palin's 2008 sponsorships. The Palin family's lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, responded to the APOC in an October letter that Arctic Cat itself paid no fee. The sponsorship fees Palin and his partner, Scott Davis, did receive "went to the team through Scott Davis for racing expenditures," according to Van Flein. He listed amounts ranging from $2,500 from Alaska Pacific Leasing to $500 from Debenham Investments.

Van Flein told the APOC that the sponsorship also allowed Palin and the team to buy snowmachines and parts at a discount.

In his filings for 2008, Todd Palin cited confidentiality of the sponsorship agreement and did not provide an amount. The APOC accepted that after seeing a redacted copy of the agreement's demand of confidentiality.

Todd Palin did, however, disclose a $3,252 "Arctic Cat discount on snowmachines" in a subsequent disclosure covering the first six months of 2009. That was the final disclosure the Palins are required to file with the state.

Interesting Photos in the book (0.00 / 0)
Diva,
There is one photo in particular that you might find interesting in Sarah's book.   It is a lovely photo of the ENTIRE family, each sitting on their own Arctic Cat Snowmachines, except Piper who is on an Arctic Cat 4x4.  And they are all decked out in full Arctic Cat gear!  Amazing isn't it?

Seems awfully extravagant for such a "working class family" don't you think?   6 snowmachines, a 4x4, and then of course there is Todd's race machines, both the official one and the one used for "practice".   That is a hella amount of cash being laid out.  Gotta be at least close to $100,000.00 just in those machines alone!

My brother manages a college bookstore (0.00 / 0)
and does author signings frequently. The normal procedure is that the author usually arrives early and signs a quantity of books ahead of time, which are then tabled for purchase. Patrons frequently bring books they already own and they are always signed (even if the book is well-worn and/or a prior book). Granted, these are normally not "stars" but the point is customer service, keeping the customer happy.

While I haven't been to book signings of "stars"... (0.00 / 0)
...I've worked with a number of them in the music world.  Bo Diddly, Carne Wilson, Taj Mahal just to name a few.  They would always sign any CD or vinyl album someone brought to the show.  It shows respect to the fans...any real celebrity knows they would be nothing without their fans.

Eye on you ===

Sponsored racers get demos and loaners as well as discounts.

Arctic Cat sells Todd one machine for cost of around $5,000, that's the racing machine. The cost is carried on an account. After the race, Todd sells it used for - you guessed it - $5,000 and sends the money to Arctic Cat.

The practice machine is a demo. Todd puts 1,500 miles on it and then turns it over to a dealer. He sells it and sends the money to Arctic Cat.

The 4 X 4 is a demo/loaner, goes back to AC after 6 months.

Net cash outlay for Todd: $0. That's because he is partners with Scott Davis who wins races for AC and has for over 15 years.
