Though many of us suffer from Palin Factor Fatigue, it is irrefutable that there is a nagging curiosity to have the question answered, ?How in the world did Sarah Palin become so popular and why do we still need to hear about her?? My book answers these questions in detail and urges us all to be vigilant. She is one of a small pool of ?rising stars in the republican party? as John McCain stated as recently as January 25, 2009 on Fox News Sunday.

As unbelievable as her meteoric rise was we cannot delude ourselves, turning our backs once again, into thinking that she and those like her are going away. This woman is joined by millions of loyalists whose perception is that she was persecuted in the media, stifled by McCain, and mocked by liberals - and now the theocratic conservatives are regrouping with a vengeance!

About

THE BLOG--HISTORY

"Blue Oasis" began in 2005 in its Blogger format (now an archive) and became possibly the first Alaska Blog on Progressive Politics. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis was honored to represent Alaska as the state blog.

Transition--Community Blog

In September 2008, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis moved to a Soapblox Community Blog format. Readers can become full participants by registering on the blog to comment and write "diaries." Diary titles appear on the right sidebar for folks to read and provide comments. Blog editors may choose to move some of these diaries to the front page.

While this Community was formed specifically with Alaska in mind, all "friends of Alaska" are welcome as members!

**Note about registering** Scroll down the right side until you find the link to register. Then, just follow the instructions!

**Note about comments** To comment on a story, click on the heading and then look for the "comment bar" at the bottom (it's light grey, I can't seem to change it). I believe the font color NOW permits you to see the "post comment" text.

YOUR BLOGMISTRESS

My name is Linda Kellen Biegel and I am a former 15-year Federal employee. Thirteen of those years were spent working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I am also semi-retired from the Alaska music scene (singer, sound tech, stage manager, logistics).

When the blog was chosen to represent Alaska in the DNCC State Blogger Pool at the Denver Convention, I attended with the help of Alaska Real blogmistress, Writing Raven and my daughter Morrigan. On August 29th, one day after Barack Obama's inspiring speech at Invesco Field , my life took another turn as it did for all Alaska bloggers when Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain's VP running mate. Since then, I've either assisted or have been interviewed by media from the UK, Italy, Australia and Germany as well as national media outlets such as Wall Street Journal, NY Times, ABC Good Morning America's Kate Snow, National Journal, Dallas Morning News, LA Times, and NPR.

Presently, I work as a freelance writer, PR, event coordinator, community organizer, wife to computer programmer Josh and mother to 11-year-old Morrigan. Our family especially enjoys our summers in Alaska where we get to subsistence set-net fish Sockeye salmon as well as halibut fish/whalewatch in the family's homemade aluminum boat, "The Neverdone" (when it's working). We reside in Anchorage, Alaska.

Origin of "Celtic Diva"

I've used "Celtic Diva" as a screen name since the early 1990's on Web TV.

"Celtic"

"Folks have asked about my Celtic heritage, especially in light of my name. What they don't realize is that I'm adopted. I was born Valerie Morehead of the Clan Muirhead. I was adopted at three-months-old by the Kellens. I always "knew" I was Celt even before really knew. I was drawn to all things Scottish, especially music. That's why my parents eventually told me at age 16."

"Diva"

"Linda is well-known in Alaska & beyond as the prominent progressive political blogger Celtic Diva of Celtic Diva?s Blue Oasis. But back in the day, the early 1990s, I knew her as Linda Kellen, a member of the local folk/rock band Sky is Blu, which amongst other things performed in at least a couple or so of the annual women?s show Celebration of Change, in which I also performed. And if you don?t already know, let me tell you: Linda is one fine damn singer."

I went on after the break-up of "Sky is Blu" to perform with various Alaska musicians and work with national folks like Bo Diddly, Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Taj Mahal, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bad Company, Creedence Clearwater, Carny Wilson, etc...

If we look at the record, Palin's resignation should come as no surprise

by: Celtic Diva

Mon Jul 06, 2009 at 04:28:18 AM AKDT

I was exploring the clever snarkfest which is Wonkette and the plethora of Palin posts.  The "post swarm" started when I "consorted" with Dr. Chill to "desecrate" her icon through the evils of photoshop.  It has continued through the insanity that has been her resignation and up to the wacked-out strategy of threatening another Alaskan media figure (Shannyn Moore) with legal action.

Among those Wonkette posts was a little gem under the title "win of the afternoon"...they highlighted a comment from Alaska Girl:

She didn't finish her term as mayor, stepping down to run for Lt. Governor. She didn't finish her term on the petroleum board ethics panel, she resigned in protest and then ran for Governor. She doesn't want the office, she just likes running for office. She doesn't want (can't actually) accomplish anything, she just wants to talk about it.

That was absolutely correct.

However, before that, Sarah Palin left the Wasilla City Council only one year into her second three-year term in order to take the Mayor's job.

And, if you go all the way back, it took her five years and five colleges to get a Journalism degree.

Quitting before the job is done is her modus operendi.

Of course, this last year has also highlighted other patterns that Sarah Palin can't seem to break. Her biggest, most glaring pattern is hypocrisy mixed with secrecy.

--Palin did leave the office of Mayor of Wasilla a few months early, but not before she campaigned for Lt. Governor from the Mayor's Office...the same thing for which she filed an ethics complaint against Randy Reudrich.

In the middle of the primary, a conservative columnist in the state, Paul Jenkins, unearthed e-mail messages showing that Ms. Palin had conducted campaign business from the mayor's office. Ms. Palin handled the crisis with a street fighter's guile.

"I told her it looks like she did the same thing that Randy Ruedrich did," Mr. Jenkins recalled. "And she said, 'Yeah, what I did was wrong.' "

--In Palin's resignation speech, she continued her steady drumbeat of whining about the media, bloggers, the internet...everyone who has criticized her or made her life difficult.  Yet, during the campaign, she reamed Hillary Clinton for her "whining" about the press:

--During her resignation speech, Palin also blamed those who "cost the State money" by filing "all those complaints."

During Palin's inauguration speech, she told us to "hold her accountable":

She said the same thing about the Troopergate investigation (before she changed her mind):

Palin steadfastly denies the allegations, and with her signature resolve, said she welcomes the investigation. "Hold me accountable," she challenge her critics.

And, during Palin's own ethics complaint against Randy Ruedrich, she wanted more transparency, not less:

Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission Chairwoman Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning amid frustration that she is being forced to keep silent about ethics allegations against Republican Party of Alaska chairman Randy Ruedrich.

"I'm forced to withhold information from Alaskans, and that goes against what I believe in as a public servant," Palin said in a Friday interview.

Today, Sarah Palin doesn't seem to have any problem at all witholding information from Alaskans.  It obviously suits her long-term purpose to leave us in the dark.  I have my own theory as to what's going on.  However, no matter what the actual details of "why" she resigned, it's pretty clear that they involve personal or financial gain...much like the basis for every single ethics complaint filed against her.

If we were paying attention, we should have seen this coming.

Somewhere along the line Sarah learned that most other people are lazy and take your own self-estimates as fact, and she's milked it for all it's worth. She has this pretty face and acts all nice and folksy and talks about being bold and being held accountable and not wanting to play the victim, and no one (least of all the media) notices that she's nasty and vindictive and vainglorious and whines constantly.

I can see her giving up her position on the Counsel to run for mayor, or her mayoral position to run for lt. governor. But there is no convincing reason for quitting the O&G Commission or the Governor's office except that when the going gets tough, Sarah quits and heads out for greener pastures. When I first saw her college record, I thought it told a lot about her. As a former university professor, I've seen her type before. Pretty, spoiled little bitches whose parents were teachers at their local high school; they got away with murder, and come into college thinking they can skip classes and not take tests they're not ready for and not turn in papers on time, and just bat their eyelashes and cry to get their own way. When it doesn't work at the first college they attend, they try another, and another.

It's incredible to me she's managed to milk this gig for as long as she has.

Well, midnightcajun,

Fortunately, it appears that this teat has finally run dry.

Paul Jenkins (0.00 / 0)
Regarding the Paul Jenkins episode didn't Palin issue a press release accusing Paul Jenkins of attacking her.

'Palin Campaign Sees First Signs of Rumored Smear Campaign.'

Jenkins replied -

"Good grief. Frankly...I've never seen a politician come unhinged so quickly as Palin when asked a few straightforward questions."

He said her "campaign [was] rooted in one thing: the perception that Palin somehow wears a halo and is not your average, run-of-the-mill politician"

"When her goody-two-shoes act starts to crumble - and going nuts because of a few obvious questions seems a first crack - folks may see her for the rank politician she is, and not necessarily a good one at that," Jenkins wrote.

Looks like Palin's shoes are causing her lots of problems.

I hope all these examples of Palin's unhinged-ness... (0.00 / 0)
...are going to end up in Geoffrey Dunn's book on Palin, 'cuz they sure aren't going to be in HER book.

I don't "hate" SP like the conservatives are claiming... (4.00 / 2)
Can Palin see Obama from her house now that he's in Russia?

I have never "hated" her. I dislike her politics. I dislike her hypocrisy. I think she should never have accepted the nomination and stayed home with her pregnant teenage daughter and her baby with special needs. Family does come first. Sarah Palin's actions and words never match, have you noticed? And of course, over and over and over again, it is always somebody else that is the problem. One would think that she would be embarrassed by all those ethics complaints. Not Gov. Palin. Even though she asked Alaskans to keep her accountable, she blames everybody else. It is a shame that the Alaskan legislature wasted the taxpayers money when they chose to look the other way when she was found guilty of an ethics violation. Had they held her accountable then, perhaps this story would have had a different ending.
But what I find the most astonishing is her inability to gather her thoughts and present them in a coherent manner. This is a requirement for any competent professional and a "must" for a successful politician. She has no substance to her speeches just rhetoric and name calling. It is ironic that a women who said the future POTUS palled around with terrorists used that word in this post 9/11 has the audacity to complain about things said about her.
Her lies, are now well known and there too is a pattern.  This is what bothers me the most. The lies. To think she can even get away with lying for her inconvenient actions and facts. How stupid does she think the public is to think her husband accidentally joined a secessionist group 5 years in a row?

She has a pattern of being a quitter. And lying if convenient. And blaming others for her problems.
I don't think many of those ethics complaints were at all frivolous. She has a pattern now. And it is not the kind of pattern that one wants in a person in higher political office.

Diane (0.00 / 0)
I think you summed it up very well, however I can't understand the people who seem to be so drawn to her and are so loyal to her.

Is it fear? What is it? What makes the people on the personnel board dismiss all the ethics complaints against her, even the ones we all know have merit? What is it that makes this person who comes back here day after day, post after post and worships her like she/he does?

Why can't they see the lies? Why can't they see the hypocrisy?

I am like you, I don't hate her, matter of fact I tend to feel sorry for her because I think she is a very confused and disturbed person. I think her policies are wrong, not just for Alaska, but for the country as a whole. She scares me, she scares me as a woman, she scares me as a person who has influence over people and that she has enough influence that she could possibly get elected or given the White House like someone else was a little over 8 years ago, and we see how well that worked out for us.

This is what she is trying to do.. she has modeled herself after him in so many ways, and this is what she thinks she is doing. She just jumped the gun a little on the timing..but she needs the money, so she thinks she has to go on the speaking tour before she gets there instead of after like he has done..

Sorry, didn't mean to make this into a diary..

Her supporters... (0.00 / 0)
I've wondered also too, about the people who support and defend her. I think they only see the image she's projected of herself, and not her real self (not that any of us really know her "real self"). If I shared her conservative values, and I truly believed she is what she says she is--a woman who does it all, has a family, runs a state, etc, I might like her too.

Fortunately for me, I can see past the facade she's created. I wonder how long it will be until the scales fall from the eyes of those who still support her.

[ Parent ]
Unfortunately for the sake of logic... (0.00 / 0)
Neotheocons take any person whose position seems opposed to hers and heap invectives upon the critical thinker who bothers to speak up after said critical thinker has paused long enough to realize that her entire persona appears to built out of a gigantic, steamy pile of horse shit. If you question ANYTHING she says, you HATE her, you're JEALOUS, you HATE AMERICA, you HATE OUR TROOPS or some other similarly classy neocon talking point claptrap. Doesn't matter if it's true -- just keep repeating it over and over again.

Example: continuing to say that ethics investigations have cost the "taxpayers of Alaska" (where there in NO state income tax, by the way) "million and millions of dollars!", when in fact it has already been well documented that the cost was under $300,000. If she is willing to stretch the truth and inflate those figures by a magnitude of 10, it leaves one wondering if she also isn't doing the same when reporting on her own personal legal expenses.

Most distasteful is when she generically pulls people into her false reality bubble of seeming deceit as if they are her supporters, witness the rest of her false meme -- "millions and millions of dollars that could have gone to pay for teachers and policeman...", as if all teachers and policemen support her 100% and are in lockstep with her and her ideals. Or as if she would have even spent that money on teachers or police in the first place, which is a long-shot considering the FACT taht she has cut funding for BOTH prior to all of these investigations! Seriously! Stop the hypocrisy tain, Sarah, I wanna get off.

It's as if the more her mouth moves and some sounds come out, the deeper the pile of horseshit gets all because she just doesn't understand when to shut up. Not because I WANT her to shut up mind you -- she has as much right to talk as I or any of us do, but because it would be what is best for her own self-interest. But it's as if she cannot even realize that because of her seeming lack of experience and personal discipline in preventing her own foot from becoming permanently lodged in her mouth! Time to graduate from high school, Sarah. Time to act like an adult.

She has studied and learned well at the foot of the Neocons (pre-neotheocon) to become a master of their maxim that SOME of the people may be fooled ALL OF THE TIME if you take a possible lie and repeat it over and over incessantly, presenting it as truth or fact. The rhetoric and dissembling has become pathetically sad. It's pathological and borderline sociopathic. What kind of example is she setting for her children? One of taking personal responsibility for one's actions or that of the artful dodger, skirting the edges of reality, logic and truth whenever you can twist things to your advantage? How's that working out for you, Sarah?

Pudd'nhead Palin Has Bad Hair Day and sez "I Quit (3.00 / 1)
I guess this person didn't get the Buttercup memo, so, Pudd'nhead = Buttercup :)

"Pudd'nhead Palin Has Bad Hair Day and sez "I Quit"
from http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

Contrary to what Pudd'nhead says, countless others have not resigned and her definition of "honor" seems to be atypical and nonstandard:....

In the last 50 years only 33 governors have resigned:

   * 15 resigned in order to accept a presidential appointment
   * 11 resigned because they were elected or appointed to Congress or VP
   * 3 resigned due to scandal
   * 2 resigned after being tried and convicted of felonies
   * 1 due to illness
   * 1 resigned in order to prepare his fourth run at the presidency

In the last 50 years, no sitting governor resigned because of too many ethics complaints, or because "life is too short", or to avoid being a "dead fish", or to help someone else's election campaign, or because they're a "lame duck", or even to "attack in a different direction".

deluded (0.00 / 0)
I shouldn't be, but I'm amazed at how Palin's supporters think that she should be lauded for quitting.  I read that Palin said that we don't get it, "It's all about country."  WHAT is all about country?  Her quitting because she had a higher calling?  WHAT higher calling?  I guess she doesn't have to be specific, her word is enough for the people who follow her.  She and her supporters are delusional.

Thanks again Diva for following through with the arduous task of jumping through the state's hoops to get her emails.

I believe the only way to keep track of Sarah Palin... (0.00 / 0)
...and her "surprises" is to assign a trusted but INSANE friend to keep track of her, and for you to periodically query your insane friend, asking him/her "well, what do you think Sarah Palin will do next?"

I just don't think normal, sane people can predict her moves.

So, don't blame yourself for not seeing this coming, Linda.  It just substantiates your sanity.

Palin Weather Forecast:  Expect more of the same divisive behavior and more opportunities for her to lie in public.  This is business as usual, this is how she got elected.  Alaskans see a PATTERN in her wacky behavior.  Watch out for Palin's "stink eye"!
