THE BLOG--HISTORY
"Blue Oasis" began in 2005 in its Blogger format (now an archive) and became possibly the first Alaska Blog on Progressive Politics. At the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis was honored to represent Alaska as the state blog.

In September 2008, Celtic Diva's Blue Oasis moved to a Soapblox Community Blog format. Readers can become full participants by registering on the blog to comment and write "diaries." Diary titles appear on the right sidebar for folks to read and provide comments. Blog editors may choose to move some of these diaries to the front page.
While this Community was formed specifically with Alaska in mind, all "friends of Alaska" are welcome as members!

YOUR BLOGMISTRESS
My name is Linda Kellen Biegel and I am a former 15-year Federal employee. Thirteen of those years were spent working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I am also semi-retired from the Alaska music scene (singer, sound tech, stage manager, logistics).
When the blog was chosen to represent Alaska in the DNCC State Blogger Pool at the Denver Convention, I attended with the help of Alaska Real blogmistress, Writing Raven and my daughter Morrigan. On August 29th, one day after Barack Obama's inspiring speech at Invesco Field , my life took another turn as it did for all Alaska bloggers when Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain's VP running mate. Since then, I've either assisted or have been interviewed by media from the UK, Italy, Australia and Germany as well as national media outlets such as Wall Street Journal, NY Times, ABC Good Morning America's Kate Snow, National Journal, Dallas Morning News, LA Times, and NPR.
Presently, I work as a freelance writer, PR, event coordinator, community organizer, wife to computer programmer Josh and mother to 11-year-old Morrigan. Our family especially enjoys our summers in Alaska where we get to subsistence set-net fish Sockeye salmon as well as halibut fish/whalewatch in the family's homemade aluminum boat, "The Neverdone" (when it's working). We reside in Anchorage, Alaska.

I've used "Celtic Diva" as a screen name since the early 1990's on Web TV.

"Folks have asked about my Celtic heritage, especially in light of my name. What they don't realize is that I'm adopted. I was born Valerie Morehead of the Clan Muirhead. I was adopted at three-months-old by the Kellens. I always "knew" I was Celt even before really knew. I was drawn to all things Scottish, especially music. That's why my parents eventually told me at age 16."

I went on after the break-up of "Sky is Blu" to perform with various Alaska musicians and work with national folks like Bo Diddly, Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Taj Mahal, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bad Company, Creedence Clearwater, Carny Wilson, etc...

I am on information overload so LET'S GET TO IT!

Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary had their hearing and public testimony regarding Mr. Ross's nomination to be our next Attorney General. As Mudflats so skillfully recounted, there were some very pointed questions asked, especially by Sen. Donny Olsen:
Senator Donny Olson: There seems to be, at this point, a polarization of what's going on because of different views and different agendas. [snip] You've talked today about some of the issues related to subsistence and rural preference, and how those people who didn't have the financial resources had to go 5000 miles away to [Washington D.C.] to try to get something done with federal law that preempted state law. And what I see is that's the problem with what's going on here, and I'm afraid that your confirmation, and your sitting in that position as "the General", that you're not the one declaring the war, but you're the one that's going to have all the casualties under your command. [snip]
The problem that I see is that the casualties may be those people out there in rural Alaska that I represent, that I've had torrents of emails , and torrents of communication stating that they have difficulty with your appointment. And this is the allegation - that as an appointee looking for confirmation, the answers will be there to placate the legislature, until the confirmation is over, and then the war will really start. What do I say to those people who are out there who've got reams of statements that you've made that are put in the category of not being able to bring people together as you've talked about...where they've had to go to Washington D.C. to get some type of arrangement to continue to do what they've done for years? What do I say to them?
WAR: You don't go to Washington D.C. anymore. Washington D.C. is not friends with Alaska. The General's job is not to cause casualties with its own people. The General's job is to win the war against the enemy. Alaskans should be working together. I've felt that the subsistence issue is very divisive . It could have been handled a long time ago without being divisive. But the problem with subsistence is that some people felt that they should have more rights than other people, and instead of sitting down and working out to make sure that subsistence was protected... you can't have "those who have" and "those who have not" and not develop enemies.
Later, the Senate Judiciary had public testimony which at times was quite riveting. There was a lawyer who had worked closely with Ross and was concerned because Ross was "unable to listen to the people on the other side of the argument." There were people who were concerned about Mr. Ross's anti-child-services beliefs. That is reflected in the shocking written testimony of Leah Burton:
Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; "If a guy can't rape his wife...who's he gonna rape?" and "There wouldn't be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut."
Other members made their own contributions such as, "We have the right to discipline our wives and children without the interference of government in our lives!"
These comments were greeted with laughter and affirmative responses by the group. Given the fact that they had referred to me in recent months as a "femi-nazi", the comments I was witness to at this meeting, while abhorrent, were unfortunately not surprising.
This announcement by Governor Palin is a slap in the face to all single parents who have no choice but to rely upon the State Department of Law to support court orders for child support, as well as those persons who need the Department to enforce criminal laws against sexual assault and domestic violence. Mr. Ross is the antithesis of the type of person that should be the Attorney General. This has been clearly demonstrated by his own words and actions in public.
CC had Leah Burton on her show The Cutting Edge today. It was one of the most powerful segments I've ever heard.
Tomorrow, the House Judiciary Committee will have their hearing on Ross's appointment at 1:00 PM Alaska Time. This will be followed by public testimony at 5:30 PM Alaska Time. All of this will be seen on Gavel-to-Gavel so I encourage all of those who can to watch it.
Just to let you know, almost THREE HOURS AGO the out-of-state palinbot websites were already encouraging their out-of-state palinbots to fill the House Judiciary Committees boxes with email.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call or email the members of the House Judiciary Committee. Make sure the first thing you give them is your name and what part of Alaska you live in. Then tell them NOT TO ACCEPT THIS APPOINTMENT!!!!
